According to Tastewise’s “The Gen Z Food Code: Cracking the Next Billion Appetites,” report released this year, Gen Zers are not eating like previous generations. Indeed, the report states, “Gen Z is shaping a food culture where taste, ethics, convenience and trendability collide. Their grocery carts are digital, their cravings are global, and their loyalty is earned one experience at a time.”
Here are some standout pointers from the report, along with action items for restaurant owners to take to cater to this growing diner base:
Preference: When it comes to flavor versus convenience, Gen Z'ers are nearly split – 50.8% prioritize flavor/variety, whereas 50.5% seek convenience.
Action: Focus on core menu items, done well.
Preference: When it comes to quick service versus comfort food, 75.5% prefer quick and easy meals, edging out comfort food by 3.3%.
Action: Offer online ordering and takeout options, packaged well.
Preference: When it comes to natural versus organic food, “natural” foods weere valued 1.8 times more than organic.
Action: Source and advertise clean-label products.
Preference: Gen Z'ers prefer meaningful choices: 50% choose local produce with 3 times choosing grass-fed products.
Action: Highlight sustainable items on menus and social media.
